The right X-ray kit: portable DR, full-size C-arm or mini?

A battery-powered radiography kit, a hospital mobile cart and an extremity C-arm solve different jobs. Here is what makes each worth buying—and where older OEC systems still fit.

Your buying summary

The decision at a glance.

Start here
Start with a complete MinXray Impact Wireless package for outreach. For full-size fluoroscopy, compare OEC One CFD with an inspected, supportable refurbished OEC 9800 or 9900.
Spend more when
DRX-Revolution's powered movement can help frequent bedside work. Elite CFD earns consideration when its positioning or cooling addresses a real procedural limit. Demonstrate mini-C-arm anatomy coverage before choosing one.
Watch the budget
Include the detector, acquisition computer, software, batteries, positioning equipment and commissioning. OEC One's standby function is for room changes; it does not establish off-grid X-ray operation.
Check the support
For a used C-arm, require tube, image-chain and motion-system assessment. A manufacturer parts category does not establish stock or repair coverage for the offered serial.

Ask the supplier

  1. Can this generator and detector cover our examination list?
  2. Can the C-arm obtain every required view with our table?
  3. What happens if commissioning fails or the detector needs replacement?

Outreach DR and hospital mobile DR need different hardware

MinXray Impact Wireless provides a reproducible starting point for outreach: a specified TR90BH battery generator, detector and acquisition computer. Check that its 40–90 kV and 20–10 mA range covers the planned work, then verify the complete battery workload. Battery-powered does not mean all-day capacity. DRX-Revolution’s motor drive and collapsible column address repeated bedside movement; those benefits depend on suitable floors, charging and daily use. Neither format wins from portability alone.

The earlier LCP1 recommendation needs a bill of materials before it can be compared: generator, detector, software/version, batteries and responsible service organization. Likewise, an old MinXray/Canon CXDI or Varian pairing is not automatically today’s Impact package. Exact components determine exposure capability, compatibility and the replacement bill.

Protect the detector—and the computer that makes it useful

A complete working NAOMI installation may justify continued use while a replacement is planned. The manufacturer’s 15–35°C operating envelope and older Windows listing are specific limitations; it warns that some Windows 10 systems do not operate correctly. Demonstrate capture, patient identification, DICOM/export and the supported replacement-computer configuration before changing any part of that chain.

Detector handling is a purchasing issue; damage coverage and repairability must be established for the offered unit. Obtain the offered detector’s repair or exchange terms and spare availability. A replacement panel is useful only if the acquisition software and generator can still work with it; otherwise one damaged component can stop the entire room.

A refurbished OEC has to compete as a commissioned system

OEC One CFD gives the current-platform comparison a defined starting point: choose 21 or 31 cm detector coverage for the required anatomy and demonstrate positioning with the actual table. Its five-minute standby supports movement between rooms; it does not establish off-grid X-ray operation. Elite CFD is worth considering when its positioning, clinical profiles or cooling address real workload limits. Specify optional vascular, cardiac or motorized functions instead of assuming they come with the family name.

OEC 9800 and 9900 remain conditional used-system candidates. Require serial-specific inspection, tube and image-chain testing, motion-system assessment, software/license confirmation and a remedy if commissioning fails. GE’s 9800 parts category, Brazilian 9900 category and US OEC service offering are useful leads, not proof of assembly stock or overseas eligibility. Compare delivered, commissioned cost and repair provision with One CFD or Elite CFD. A working 9400 or 9600 can remain in service with demonstrated local maintenance; the earlier assertion that they were not too old does not establish a new-buy recommendation today.

Buy a mini C-arm only after the views fit

TAU 1512’s 160-degree orbital rotation and 20-inch arc depth, and InSight FD Flex’s rotating detector, give the team concrete positioning differences to test. Neither establishes equivalence to a full-size unit for trunk imaging. The FD Flex dealer advertises sale and service for its offering; confirm repair location and exclusions, because that is not an OEM lifecycle or overseas-service promise. The older InSight II name should not inherit another generation’s specifications.

Acceptance must cover the generator, detector, table clearance and image-review/export process together, with qualified radiation commissioning and recurring quality assurance included in the service budget. Current product pages and flat-panel architecture establish features, not lower failure rates; no comparative field reliability dataset was established.

MinXray Impact Wireless with TR90BH generator

Outreach DR shortlist

Best for
Outreach where a powered hospital cart is impractical.
Why consider it
A battery generator, 14 × 17-inch CsI detector and computer/DICOM software form a specified alternative to the incomplete LCP1 description.
The trade-off
TR90BH is specified at 40–90 kV and 20–10 mA; confirm it satisfies the intended examinations and throughput. Battery power does not establish a whole-day capacity.
Price & package
Quote required: exact detector, stand, case, batteries and software.
Support
Manufacturer package documented; destination repair, spare detector and export warranty unconfirmed.
Sources:MinXray

Carestream DRX-Revolution

Hospital mobile DR alternative

Best for
Frequent bedside imaging with suitable floors and charging.
Why consider it
Motor drive, a collapsible column and optional alignment assistance address daily positioning and movement.
The trade-off
It is a different deployment class from a carryable generator. Price the selected detector, drive-battery service and software lifecycle; do not import options from a brochure into an assumed base package.
Price & package
Quote required: exact generation, detector and software.
Support
Manufacturer service channels exist; local response, software and parts coverage unconfirmed.
Sources:Carestream

RF NAOMI, exact detector size to be identified

Retain or retrofit only after compatibility verification

Best for
An existing working fixed detector/computer/generator installation.
Why consider it
Documented CCD detectors, USB connection and DICOM/JPEG output can support continued use of a complete existing room.
The trade-off
The listed operating envelope is 15–35°C; the page names older Windows versions and warns that some Windows 10 systems do not work correctly. A product page is not a modern operating-system support commitment.
Price & package
Quote required; historical refurbishment access establishes no current price.
Support
Current supported computer configuration and repair eligibility unconfirmed.

GE OEC One CFD

Current-platform full-size C-arm baseline

Best for
General fluoroscopy needing an integrated movable display.
Why consider it
GE offers 21 or 31 cm flat-panel configurations. Select detector coverage around required anatomy and positioning.
The trade-off
The cited five-minute standby feature supports movement between rooms; it is not evidence of off-grid X-ray operation. Heat capacity, image modes and required options need exact configuration comparison.
Price & package
Quote required: detector variant, software and service.
Support
Manufacturer documentation available; country availability and service horizon unconfirmed.

GE OEC 9800

Conditional refurbished budget challenger

Best for
A hospital with a technician and critical parts for the exact unit.
Why consider it
GE still lists an OEC 9800 parts category. A documented inspected unit remains a conditional alternative to a new system.
The trade-off
A parts catalog does not establish complete support, stock or eligibility for every serial number. Require tube, image-chain and motion-system assessment plus a usable remedy if commissioning fails.
Price & package
Unit-specific refurbished quote required; no current price or parts stock verified.
Support
Parts-category presence confirmed; comprehensive manufacturer support unconfirmed.

GE OEC Elite CFD

Higher-capability full-size alternative

Best for
Work needing the offered geometry, clinical profiles or extended imaging capability.
Why consider it
GE documents positioning options, selectable clinical profiles and cooling aimed at demanding procedures.
The trade-off
Optional vascular/cardiac functions and motorized movement must be explicitly quoted. More capability adds little value if the service cannot use or maintain it.
Price & package
Quote required: exact detector, clinical options and service.
Support
Manufacturer documentation available; destination service unconfirmed.

Orthoscan TAU 1512

Mini C-arm shortlist

Best for
Defined extremity imaging in a restricted space.
Why consider it
Flat-panel technology, 160-degree orbital rotation and 20-inch arc depth give concrete positioning features to test.
The trade-off
Demonstrate intended anatomy and patient positioning. Its mini-C-arm role does not establish equivalence to a full-size system for trunk imaging.
Price & package
Quote required: configured system, accessories and service.
Support
Manufacturer channels exist; field repairs and parts commitment unconfirmed.
Sources:Orthoscan

Hologic InSight FD Flex

Mini C-arm alternative with explicit support conditions

Best for
Extremity work fitting the detector geometry and seller’s repair arrangements.
Why consider it
The dealer’s own offering describes a rotating flat panel and service coverage, a specific alternative to an unspecified InSight II.
The trade-off
Dealer-advertised support is not a manufacturer lifecycle commitment or overseas coverage. Confirm exact generation, supply status, repair location and exclusions before accepting a savings claim.
Price & package
Quote required; no numeric asking price verified.
Support
Dealer sale/service advertised; OEM lifecycle and destination eligibility unconfirmed.

Beyond the purchase price

Budget for the complete service.

Cost per usable radiograph or completed fluoroscopy case = (delivered system + room/table and radiation infrastructure + commissioning + detector/tube/battery provision + software + service + downtime cover) / usable studies or cases completed.

  • Detector repair/exchange and a continuity plan
  • Tube and generator service, motion brakes and cables
  • Transport crating, site power, charging and cooling
  • Image storage, export licensing and acquisition-computer support
  • Table compatibility and local commissioning

Questions to resolve

  • What exact LCP1 bill of materials can be ordered and supported now?
  • Does each quoted DR generator cover the hospital's examination list at its expected workload?
  • Which major OEC 9800 assemblies are actually repairable for this serial number?
  • Are mini-C-arm views sufficient for the planned service when tested with its table?
  • Who pays return freight or on-site labor after export?

What the evidence does not establish

  • No current matched quotations, delivered totals or live stock verified.
  • No model-to-model field reliability ranking established.
  • No current support commitment for LCP1, OEC 9400/9600 or the unspecified legacy Canon/Varian detector models.
  • Manufacturer lifecycle coverage for InSight FD Flex remains unconfirmed.
  • OEC 9900 end-of-support date, serial-specific service eligibility and destination parts availability were not established; an accessible Brazilian parts catalog is a procurement lead, not a support commitment.
