Laboratory equipment: when automation earns its running costs
A small lab needs the right workload, reagent packs and service route. Bigger throughput alone is a poor reason to upgrade.

About this photograph
Related equipment category; XT-4000i is explicitly identified, not presented as XQ-320, pocH-100i or XW-100.
The decision at a glance.
- Start here
- For modest chemistry demand, compare HumaLyzer 4000 with trained manual preparation. For three-part CBCs, match XQ-320 or pocH-100i to volume and reagent supply. Preserve funds for microscopy and suitable centrifugation.
- Consider alternatives when
- BK200 automation earns consideration when preparation limits output and its water, temperature and service requirements are funded. Compare human BK-6310 when five-part capability is required; XP-300 is a three-part analyzer.
- Watch the budget
- Price reagent packs, open stability, controls and washing at expected and lower volume. BK200 specifies 15–30°C operation and deionized water. Buy a centrifuge for the required tube, rotor geometry and force.
- Check the support
- Get local fluidics and reagent support. Inspect microscope image quality and focus stability. Replace a microtome only when sectioning limits an otherwise functioning histology pathway.
Ask the supplier
- What does each accepted result cost at half our expected volume?
- Which reagent, control and water supplies are required?
- Which rotor, adapters and relative centrifugal force fit our tube method?
Buy for the quiet week as well as the busy morning
A chemistry analyzer's maximum speed says little about its cost at your workload. Count accepted patient results by assay, then account for controls, calibration, repeats and unused reagent. A panel contains several tests, so 200 tests per hour is not 200 complete patient panels. Ask what happens to opened packs during the service's quieter weeks before treating low reagent unit prices as a saving.
HumaLyzer 4000 makes sense where trained staff can handle preparation and pipetting without delaying the required work. BK200 earns its additional complexity when automated handling removes that bottleneck. Its stated operating range is 15–30°C and deionized-water use is below 5 L/hour; those are installation costs and constraints to resolve before ordering. Piccolo is a separate low-volume chemistry approach with refrigerated discs, covered in the point-of-care guide.
Make the differential requirement explicit
Sysmex XP-300 is a three-part differential analyzer. Comparing it with a five-part analyzer as though their differentials were equivalent would misstate the capability being purchased. XQ-320 and pocH-100i are also three-part choices; the latter targets lower daily volume. Choose within that group when its capability meets the laboratory's defined requirements.
BK-6310 provides a documented five-part comparison, but it is not an assumed interchangeable successor to the earlier BK6300 name. Specify the human model, controls, reagent system, flags and local validation/support. The extra differential capability is worth paying for when required; it does not establish superior uptime. Historical reports of Sysmex clogging or favorable BioBase purchasing relationships do not measure current comparative failure rates.
Retain an XW-100 only within a confirmed operating arrangement. Its official support portal remains available, but that does not establish new sales, portable deployment or independent offline operation. For XW-100 and older BK6000/BK Sapphire, BS200 and ACT 2 Diff installations, confirm the exact supply and repair position before expanding the fleet.
A $317.99 microscope still needs to pass the bench test
OMAX's October 16, 2026 offer makes M82ES-A188V a specific budget candidate: US$317.99 with a vinyl case and the listed US/Canada adapter. Inspect prepared-slide images, objective quality, stage movement, focus stability and illumination for the actual specimen work. High advertised magnification alone does not answer those questions. Return freight also belongs in the budget where warranty service requires shipping the instrument away.
CX23 is the alternative to evaluate where its exact regional clinical configuration and optical service justify the difference. Keeping an accepted working microscope, or using an accepted OMAX as backup, may leave more money for reagents and QC. Neither the public CX23 page nor a low OMAX price establishes diagnostic suitability for every laboratory task.
The tube method chooses the centrifuge
Start with the tubes, required relative centrifugal force, load and rotor geometry. HORIZON 6 Flex offers six positions up to 10 mL, a horizontal rotor and up to 2,000 ×g. EBA 200 supplies an eight-place, 15 mL fixed-angle alternative up to 3,461 ×g. Those differences can decide suitability before price enters the discussion; EBA 200 S is a separate higher-force variant.
Drucker's US$1,982.66 October 16, 2026 offer is a useful anchor for the named 6 Flex configuration. Add the correct adapters, delivery and service terms. For an older centrifuge, identify the rotor, inspect its history and condition, and arrange the appropriate speed/timing verification. A functioning motor with an unsuitable or uncertain rotor is an incomplete purchase.
Replace the microtome only after locating the histology bottleneck
A working American Optical microtome may deserve retention after exact identification and assessment of clamps, blades, mechanical condition, section quality and repairs. BIOCUT and HM325 are sensible replacement candidates when the microtome itself limits an established service.
If fixation, tissue processing, embedding, staining, ventilation, interpretation or quality assurance is the missing step, a newer microtome will not complete the service. Fund that pathway or a dependable referral arrangement first. Across the laboratory shortlist, local consumables and technical support remain unresolved procurement inputs; the public sources do not establish a comparative field-reliability winner.
Compare the options.

Model notes, pricing & support 12 options
HUMAN HumaLyzer 4000
Low-volume chemistry shortlist
- Best for
- A staffed laboratory that can perform manual preparation and does not need continuous automated loading.
- Why consider it
- A clinical chemistry photometer with reference-channel optics, incubation and programmable methods offers a route to useful chemistry without buying an automated sample-handling system.
- The trade-off
- Operator preparation and pipetting remain workload and quality dependencies. Compare validated assay applications and reagent pack sizes rather than assuming any open reagent will work.
- Price & package
- Quote required as of 2026-10-16: instrument, method applications, pipettes, controls, calibrators, starter reagents and training.
- Support
- Current manufacturer product and support routes verified. Local engineer coverage, consumable delivery and method validation remain unconfirmed.
BioBase BK200
Conditional automated chemistry value option
- Best for
- Sustained routine chemistry volume with reliable water, controlled room conditions and service.
- Why consider it
- BioBase specifies 200 tests/hour, cooled reagent positions and reusable reaction cuvettes. These are useful capacity features when workload actually uses them.
- The trade-off
- The page specifies deionized-water use below 5 L/hour and operating conditions of 15–30°C. Automation adds fluidics, washing and reagent-stability obligations; a bargain instrument without these is not a complete laboratory.
- Price & package
- Quote required as of 2026-10-16; no verified current public price. Include installation, water system, reagent menu, calibrators, QC and two years of service/consumables.
- Support
- Current manufacturer model page verified. Manufacturer contact availability is not proof of a destination-country repair service or exact regulatory authorization.
Sysmex XQ-320
Routine three-part CBC choice
- Best for
- A small laboratory whose demand exceeds occasional testing and can support the reagent/QC program.
- Why consider it
- The current model provides a three-part differential, 17 parameters and specified throughput up to 70 samples/hour. It is a more relevant fresh comparison than automatically buying another old XP-series unit.
- The trade-off
- Maximum throughput is not daily economic throughput. Dedicated reagents, controls, cleaning and available technical support set cost and readiness at low volume.
- Price & package
- Quote required as of 2026-10-16 for analyzer, reagent/control packs, connectivity, training and regional service.
- Support
- Current manufacturer product page and BeyondCare/QC routes verified; local eligibility, offline workflow and service terms need confirmation.
Sysmex pocH-100i
Lower-volume CBC alternative
- Best for
- A laboratory testing roughly the manufacturer's intended range of up to 30 samples per day.
- Why consider it
- Closed-tube sampling and a three-part differential meet a narrower requirement without selecting on the highest throughput number.
- The trade-off
- Its stated maximum is 25 samples/hour; it does not provide a five-part differential. Reagent open-vial use and control costs still matter during quiet weeks.
- Price & package
- Quote required as of 2026-10-16 for a current supported installation, not simply a used chassis.
- Support
- Current manufacturer page and service route verified; not all markets sell the same configurations. Written country-specific support remains pending.
BioBase BK-6310, human configuration
Five-part comparison candidate
- Best for
- A laboratory with a defined need for five-part differential and a capable local distributor.
- Why consider it
- The current manufacturer specification identifies a five-part analyzer with laser scatter/flow cytometry and up to 60 tests/hour. It provides a concrete replacement candidate for the old ambiguous BK6300 recommendation.
- The trade-off
- A richer differential does not establish better uptime or lower cost. Confirm human-device registration, controls, reagent lock-in, flags, validation and engineer access; the veterinary model is a different purchase.
- Price & package
- Quote required as of 2026-10-16, including the exact human model and all reagent/control packs. No verified delivered price.
- Support
- Current manufacturer specification verified; independent comparative reliability and local support were not established.
Sysmex XW-100
Retain only with a confirmed operating arrangement
- Best for
- An existing low-volume installation supported for its actual location and workflow.
- Why consider it
- The official portal still provides user instructions, QC and service resources. This supports checking continued use rather than treating the old trip recommendation as either automatically valid or obsolete.
- The trade-off
- A support portal does not establish new-system availability, travel suitability or independent offline operation. Reagent supply, network/server requirements and support eligibility require explicit confirmation.
- Price & package
- No verified current complete-system offer; quote required before expanding or moving an installation.
- Support
- Official user-support portal verified; destination-country service, supply continuity and portable deployment not confirmed.
Evident CX23
Microscopy quote for a permanent bench
- Best for
- Routine transmitted-light work when the correct clinical configuration and local optical service are available.
- Why consider it
- LED illumination and plan-achromatic optics provide a concrete comparison with the old unspecified OMAX recommendation. Buy the objective and condenser configuration needed for the specimen work.
- The trade-off
- The public page also targets education. Confirm the exact regional diagnostic designation, oil objective and service scope rather than infer approval from brand or optical specifications.
- Price & package
- Quote required as of 2026-10-16 for exact microscope configuration, spares and delivery.
- Support
- Current manufacturer page verified; clinical configuration and local servicing unconfirmed.
OMAX M82ES-A188V
Budget microscopy comparison or validated backup
- Best for
- A cost-constrained bench able to inspect optics and validate suitability for its intended work.
- Why consider it
- This identifiable package supplies binocular viewing, LED illumination, mechanical stage and 4×/10×/40×/100× oil objectives. It turns the old generic OMAX suggestion into a specific budget comparison.
- The trade-off
- Advertised total magnification does not measure useful resolution. Diagnostic suitability, focus stability and service deserve inspection; a shipping-return warranty is not local uptime.
- Price & package
- OMAX's opened store displayed US$317.99 on 2026-10-16 for M82ES-A188V with vinyl case. The listed adapter is for US/Canada; taxes and international delivery are additional/unconfirmed.
- Support
- Manufacturer storefront and stated warranty terms verified; buyer-paid return freight and exclusions apply. Local repairs and exact clinical authorization unconfirmed.
Drucker HORIZON 6 Flex, SKU 00-376-009-000
Transparent-price routine centrifuge option
- Best for
- Blood-tube work needing a horizontal rotor and programmable validated settings.
- Why consider it
- It holds six tubes up to 10 mL and reaches up to 2,000 ×g. The complete rotor/tube-holder configuration makes its price more meaningful than a bare-motor offer.
- The trade-off
- Tube geometry and required relative centrifugal force must fit. Microtube adapters are extra; this is not a universal replacement for every laboratory centrifuge.
- Price & package
- Drucker's opened product page displayed US$1,982.66 on 2026-10-16. Confirm delivery/tax, required adapters and destination warranty coverage.
- Support
- Current manufacturer manuals, parts/support route and stated two-year warranty verified; local repair turnaround not confirmed.
Hettich EBA 200
Fixed-angle centrifuge alternative
- Best for
- Work requiring the documented eight-place, 15 mL fixed-angle configuration.
- Why consider it
- The EBA 200 specifies up to 3,461 ×g and eight positions, giving a different capacity/force tradeoff from the six-place horizontal Drucker.
- The trade-off
- Do not substitute RPM for required force or confuse EBA 200 with higher-force EBA 200 S. The rotor geometry must suit the tube manufacturer's method.
- Price & package
- Quote required as of 2026-10-16 with matching holders/adapters and voltage configuration.
- Support
- Current manufacturer specifications verified; regional service, rotor inspection support and delivered price unconfirmed.
Leica HistoCore BIOCUT
New manual microtome option
- Best for
- An established histology service replacing an unsupported manual microtome.
- Why consider it
- A current manual rotary platform with a configurable blade-holder ecosystem offers a defined equipment/support comparison to an unidentified American Optical machine.
- The trade-off
- The microtome is only one part of tissue processing. Correct clamps/blades and proven section quality matter more than buying a nominally complete chassis.
- Price & package
- Quote required as of 2026-10-16 for microtome, specimen clamp, blade holder, blades, installation and service.
- Support
- Current manufacturer product/support route verified; local parts and engineer coverage unconfirmed.
Epredia HM325
Manual microtome alternative
- Best for
- The same established histology workflow when Epredia has a stronger local service offer.
- Why consider it
- The manufacturer continues to list the HM325 manual rotary platform and associated accessories, allowing an equivalent-scope competitive quote.
- The trade-off
- Optional cooling/section-transfer accessories must not be assumed included. Compare section quality, clamping, blade supply and service rather than brand reputation.
- Price & package
- Quote required as of 2026-10-16 with an itemized configuration; no verified complete public offer.
- Support
- Current manufacturer portfolio verified; regional support term and service availability unconfirmed.
Budget for the complete service.
Cost per reportable result = (installed equipment + annual service + controls/calibrators + all reagent packs + water/power + preparation supplies + freight + repeats/expiry + referral during downtime) ÷ accepted patient results.
- Reagent pack sizes and open/onboard stability at both expected and low volume
- Independent QC, calibrators, pipettes, water treatment and refrigeration
- Local engineer response, spare fluidic parts and downtime referral costs
- Microscope objectives/illumination, centrifuge adapters/rotor condition and verification
- Histology processing, embedding, blades, stains, ventilation and interpretation beyond the microtome
Further checks & evidence limits
Questions to resolve
- Which tests and daily volumes justify automation, and what is annual cost at half that volume?
- What exact regulatory model and reagent set are supported in the destination country?
- Can the supplier show an installed local reference, service response terms and replacement-part inventory?
- What is the exact American Optical model and condition, and is the full histology pathway functioning?
What the evidence does not establish
- No independent comparative failure-rate data or destination-country service agreement was established.
- Legacy BK6000/BK Sapphire/BK6300, BS200 and ACT 2 Diff support and exact configurations remain unverified.
- Current Mindray BS-240Pro and BC-30s indexed manufacturer pages were found but could not be opened; their detailed comparison is deferred rather than inferred from snippets.
- Analyzer and histology installed prices remain quote-only. Public microscopy/centrifuge prices are US asking prices, not delivered hospital costs.
