Surgical tables and lights: will the bargain fit your cases?

Table movement, safe loads, compatible accessories and reliable illumination can matter more than a low base price. Compare Lyra, UltraSlide and CMAX X-Ray alongside two lighting options.

Your buying summary

The decision at a glance.

Start here
Compare Maquet Lyra as a general-theatre option with the complete supported table already on site. Include compatible armboards, leg supports, clamps and mattress in both packages.
Spend more when
Skytron 3603 UltraSlide's longer slide can solve imaging access limits. CMAX X-Ray suits work that uses its floating top. For lights, assess Polaris and HarmonyAIR in the intended room.
Watch the budget
Accessory replacement and engineered light installation can change the apparent bargain. Lyra's central and unrestricted load limits differ; CMAX X-Ray specifications do not describe every Cmax-family table.
Check the support
Demonstrate approved fallback controls, brakes and positioning. Check suspension drift and replacement light-driver availability. Polaris battery runtime applies to the documented mobile configuration, not every Polaris light.

Ask the supplier

  1. What load is allowed in our positions with these accessories?
  2. Can our C-arm achieve its views without hitting the base?
  3. Which controls and illumination remain available during a power or control failure?

Put the patient in the comparison—not just the load number

Lyra’s 360 kg central load figure and 180 kg unrestricted figure describe different conditions. UltraSlide’s stated 800-pound articulation capacity is a different specification again. Ask for the safe load in each required position with the actual accessories fitted; do not compare the largest numbers as though they describe the same task. The useful choice is the table that supports the intended patients and procedures within its documented limits.

UltraSlide’s 26-inch longitudinal travel can be worth paying for when it provides needed imaging access without sacrificing the required articulated positioning. CMAX X-Ray’s floating carbon-fiber top supplies a dedicated alternative for frequent image-guided work. Its 230 kg capacity and substantial table weight belong to this exact product, not every Cmax-family table. Demonstrate the C-arm’s required views with the table base, mattress and accessories in place.

Price the complete table already sitting in the room

A working table with compatible leg supports, armboards, clamps and a usable mattress has value beyond the base. A donated replacement missing those parts can be more expensive to commission than repairing the existing system. Lyra’s accessory compatibility may preserve an investment, but check each fitting and its position-specific load; matching brand names alone are insufficient.

Control recovery is another concrete comparison. Lyra documents a separate hard-wired override circuit and manual brake release. Test approved fallback operation during acceptance and obtain the battery and controller replacement procedure for the offered model. Those features can help restore operation after a control problem, but they do not establish a lower failure rate than the alternatives.

A surgical light has to reach the field and stay there

Compare Polaris and HarmonyAIR with people and equipment around the table. Check field coverage, working distance, shadows, control access and suspension drift. Peak illuminance and an attractive recording-camera option do not answer those questions. HarmonyAIR’s automatic intensity management and color configurations are features to evaluate in that setup; fund recording only when the service will use it.

The current mobile Polaris configuration advertises up to four hours at full illumination from its integrated battery. That provides a specific continuity option, not a battery-runtime claim for every ceiling or older Polaris installation. Price the mobile package separately and identify battery replacement and charging requirements. For ceiling systems, include the engineered suspension installation and access for maintenance.

An older light needs a parts answer, not an automatic rejection

The opened regional Polaris 100/200 page marks that family End of Sales and points to the newer Polaris. It does not give a worldwide end-of-service date. Inspect an existing unit’s suspension and illumination, then verify the driver, LED modules and other parts needed for that serial number before deciding to replace it.

Likewise, a long LED-life specification is about the light source, not a promise that the whole light, suspension or controls will last that long. Identify who can repair a drifting arm or failed driver at the destination. No comparative field failure data establish a longest-lasting table or lighting brand; documented mechanisms and available parts are useful evidence, with local repair capability still decisive.

Compare the options.

Skytron 3603 UltraSlide

General table alternative when slide and load matter

Best for
Cases needing substantial slide with articulated positioning.
Why consider it
Skytron specifies 26-inch top slide, 800-pound articulation capacity and 20.5-inch minimum height.
The trade-off
Additional slide and capacity are valuable only if used. Confirm the exact accessory/position restrictions and do not substitute lift capacity for articulated capacity.
Price & package
Quote required with mattress, clamps, armboards, leg supports and service.
Support
Manufacturer channels exist; destination controls, parts and service horizon unconfirmed.

Getinge Maquet Lyra

General table alternative

Best for
A theatre using compatible accessories and the documented fallback controls.
Why consider it
Manual slide supports imaging access; a separate hard-wired override circuit and manual brake release address control recovery.
The trade-off
The published 360 kg overall load applies centrally; the unrestricted figure is 180 kg. Existing accessories save money only after compatibility and position-specific loads are confirmed.
Price & package
Quote required with the actual accessory set and installation.
Support
Fallback features documented; local repair eligibility and parts commitments unconfirmed.

STERIS CMAX X-Ray Image-Guided Surgical Table

Specialist imaging alternative

Best for
Frequent imaging work that uses a floating top.
Why consider it
Longitudinal/lateral movement and an unobstructed imaging window may reduce patient or C-arm repositioning.
The trade-off
This exact CMAX X-Ray product has a 230 kg patient capacity and substantial table weight. Do not confuse it with other Cmax-family surgical tables or assume it is the best general-purpose purchase.
Price & package
Quote required: extensions, positioning accessories and controls.
Support
Specifications published; site service, battery replacement and future parts unconfirmed.
Sources:STERIS

Dräger Polaris, current generation

Surgical lighting shortlist

Best for
Primary surgical lighting or a separate mobile backup configuration.
Why consider it
The documented mobile version includes a battery rated for up to four hours at full illumination.
The trade-off
That runtime applies to the documented mobile configuration; it must not be assigned to every Polaris light. Confirm head count, suspension and power arrangement in the quote.
Price & package
Configuration quote required; price mobile and ceiling packages separately.
Support
Current documentation available; battery interval, destination repair and support duration unconfirmed.

STERIS HarmonyAIR A-Series

Ceiling surgical lighting alternative

Best for
A theatre equipped for ceiling installation and maintenance.
Why consider it
Automatic intensity management and fixed/variable color options can be evaluated before adding recording-camera equipment.
The trade-off
The published LED life concerns the light source, not guaranteed service life of the complete suspension, controls or electronics. Installation and replacement modules can dominate ownership cost.
Price & package
Quote required: heads, suspension, controls and installation; cameras separate.
Support
Parts/manual links available; comprehensive local coverage and stock unconfirmed.

Questions to resolve

  • What is the safe load in each intended position with all accessories fitted?
  • Does the C-arm achieve the required views without conflict with the table base?
  • What works during mains loss or a control failure in this exact configuration?
  • Can the destination obtain the specified mattress, battery, control and light-driver parts?
  • What does the delivered quote exclude from installation and first commissioning?

What the evidence does not establish

  • No model-specific legacy table/light recommendation supplied.
  • No current matched installed prices or comparative failure-rate evidence.
  • No destination-specific service or spare-stock commitments verified.
  • Polaris 100/200 end-of-sales evidence is regional; end-of-service is not established.
