The quote is cheap. What did they leave out?
A useful comparison starts with identical capability, complete packages and a common workload. Small omissions can reverse the price ranking.

About this photograph
This photograph illustrates the equipment context. It is not evidence of a product, supplier, software configuration or service package recommended in this guide.
The decision at a glance.
- Start here
- Write one required configuration and have each supplier price it: patient sizes, functions, accessories, software, delivery, installation, acceptance and initial supplies. Mark every omission as included, priced separately or unresolved.
- Spend more when
- Accept a higher equipment price when it lowers the complete cost or supplies a needed capability. X8 lacks the invasive-pressure option of X10/X12; T-Top Class B must actually be supplied.
- Watch the budget
- Extend the comparison through a common operating period. Add consumable pack sizes, controls, usable expiry and scheduled service. Test quieter activity: unused stock can reverse an apparent per-item saving.
- Check the support
- Attach usable software rights and named repair coverage to each offer. Ultrasound needs named probes and enabled applications; a PC-based ECG needs a supported computer/software arrangement.
Ask the supplier
- Which required function or accessory is excluded from this total?
- What changes in the recurring bill at half our expected workload?
- Which unpriced delivery, installation or support item could reverse the comparison?
Make the equipment do the same job on paper
Two offers are comparable only after their required capability matches. A model-family name or “fully loaded” description is insufficient. Write down the channels, modes, accessories, patient sizes, software and workflow the service needs. Have the seller identify the exact configuration against that list.
The EDAN X8 comparison shows why this matters. The manufacturer's configuration table assigns optional invasive blood pressure to X10/X12, not X8. If that channel is required, a lower X8 price does not establish a bargain. Similarly, the Tuttnauer T-Top range includes Class S and Class B configurations: an upgradeable machine is not evidence that the required cycle capability is supplied.
Expose the costs between the box and the first use
Use separate lines for accessories, software, freight, tax or import costs, installation, acceptance, training and initial supplies. A line marked included should identify what is included. A line marked unpriced should remain visible in the total-cost discussion until it is resolved.
Actual seller data provide useful anchors when their limits stay attached. On October 16, 2026, MFI's current M11 listing displayed US$7,562.82 plus US$495 shipping: US$8,057.82 by simple addition. The offer identifies medical M11-050/M11-051 configurations and voltage variants; it is not a dental configuration or a destination-specific landed total. Those details matter as much as the displayed number.
Work through an explicitly hypothetical comparison
The following amounts are invented solely to demonstrate the method. Assume two offers provide the same accepted capability. Offer A lists an US$8,000 machine, then needs US$1,500 of accessories, US$800 freight, US$1,200 installation/acceptance and US$500 initial stock. Its completed starting cost is US$12,000.
Offer B lists US$11,000 including the same accessories and installation/acceptance. Add US$600 freight and US$500 initial stock: US$12,100. The apparent US$3,000 machine-price saving has become a US$100 completed-package saving. Neither total includes tax, import charges or items outside this hypothetical scope. This is not a market estimate or a report of actual hospital purchases.
Then add the bill that arrives every year
Continue the same invented example at an identical workload. Assume annual replenishment and scheduled service, in addition to the initial stock, cost US$1,800 for A and US$1,200 for B. Over three years, A totals US$17,400 and B totals US$15,700. B is US$1,700 lower on these assumptions. No discounting, unscheduled repairs, taxes or downtime costs have been included.
The example's result changes when its inputs change. Replace every invented amount with the buyer's actual offers, test a quieter workload, and add known exclusions. Do not reuse the calculated saving as a fact about a brand. The useful result is learning which inputs can reverse the decision.
Turn the consumable quote into usable output
Request pack sizes, delivered expiry, storage requirements, control consumption and minimum order quantities. A low price per consumable can be expensive when a small service cannot use the pack. A larger pack may reduce freight while increasing expiry exposure; the intended workload decides which effect matters.
The Piccolo example in the point-of-care guide uses a verified US$139 ten-disc offer with a US$30 fee per item. US$169 divided by ten usable results is US$16.90; divided by eight in an illustrative scenario it is US$21.13. The lower denominator is hypothetical, not measured wastage. Keep controls, tax and other costs additional, and compare assay-equivalent workflows before drawing a purchasing conclusion.
Finish with exclusions a buyer can act on
Ask who repairs the offered serial after export, what shipping the warranty requires, and how long key supplies are available. For ultrasound, name each required probe and enabled application instead of accepting a console price. For a PC-based instrument, include the compatible computer and usable software rights.
A complete offer may still leave uncertain repair risk. State that uncertainty and seek a priced support or continuity option where possible. The aim is a comparison the receiving team can understand and challenge, with every essential dependency assigned a cost or an explicit unresolved decision.
Budget for the complete service.
Comparison total = complete starting package + recurring costs over the same period and workload + explicitly priced risks; list remaining unknowns separately.
- Configuration and accessories
- Freight and commissioning
- Assay/set quantities and pack waste
- Software and computer dependencies
- Service exclusions and repair logistics
Before you commit.
- Match exact capability and patient/accessory scope.
- Mark each required component included, excluded or unpriced.
- Separate freight, installation, acceptance and training.
- Specify voltage, licenses, probes and interfaces.
- Compare recurring supplies at one common workload.
- Model lower utilization and usable pack quantities.
- Resolve warranty geography, exclusions and repair freight.

Questions to resolve
- Which exclusion could reverse the ranking?
- Do both packages cover the same work?
- Does the preference survive lower utilization?
What the evidence does not establish
- Illustrative prices are not market estimates.
- Public offers do not establish destination delivery, tax, regulatory eligibility or service terms.
