Monitor, ECG or defibrillator? Spend on the right job

The useful upgrade may be an invasive-pressure channel, a working ECG computer or fresh defibrillator supplies—not a bigger display.

Your buying summary

The decision at a glance.

Start here
Use EDAN X8 for a basic ward-monitor comparison. Choose Midmark ECG where a supported computer already works, or ELI 230 for standalone acquisition and printing. Compare AED 3 and FRx for a dedicated AED station.
Spend more when
Required invasive pressure moves the monitor choice to configured X10/X12 or B105M; X8 cannot supply that expansion. Hospital advanced resuscitation brings R Series Plus and a documented LIFEPAK 15 into consideration.
Watch the budget
Price cuffs, probes, leads, pads and batteries before optional displays or networking. Midmark needs usable software rights; ELI needs paper and printer support. Include the FRx child key when required.
Check the support
Identify LIFEPAK 15 version, enabled functions and serial-specific inspection/correction records. Confirm recurring electrode and battery supply where the device will live.

Ask the supplier

  1. Which patient sizes and parameters does this monitor package cover?
  2. Does the ECG price include supported software and retrievable records?
  3. Which replacement pads, batteries and child accessories will remain available?

The X8 bargain ends where invasive pressure begins

The X8 has a useful place in a ward budget because its basic configuration is identifiable. The opened PartsSource offer is USD 3,358.06 on October 16, 2026 for the stated New OEM Original package. Its price does not buy every channel on EDAN's comparison chart: optional invasive pressure appears on X10/X12, not X8. If IBP belongs in the requirement, changing the model is part of the purchase decision; a promise to add it to X8 later is not a plan.

For beds that need only the X8 channels, spend the remaining budget on the right probe sizes, cuffs, ECG leads, temperature probe, battery and mount. Add CO2 only as a defined configured requirement. B105M earns attention when modular expansion or existing GE service arrangements have real value; B125M's larger display alone does not establish better measurements. The earlier TeleView recommendation cannot be renewed until its OEM identity, measurement technology and service documentation are resolved.

A known MP50 or DASH can still be worth maintaining when its installed parameters and maintenance history match the bed. Another unknown used unit is a different purchase: it adds a new repair obligation. Compare the cost of completing that particular station with a current complete one, rather than comparing an empty used chassis with a fully equipped new monitor.

The ECG decision starts with the computer

Midmark Digital ECG is attractive when the clinic already has a supported computer, usable software rights, backups and someone to maintain them. Its USB-powered recorder avoids another console battery and printer. ELI 230 becomes the stronger standalone option when buying and supporting that computer would be a new project. Compare the cost of a completed, retrievable study: software licensing can be as decisive for one system as paper and printer service are for the other.

An old CardioPerfect recorder does not become unusable merely because a current Hillrom regional page marks it discontinued. It does become a maintain-existing-system decision rather than an easy new-fleet choice. The 2025 IQecg manual and its repair contacts similarly justify investigating an existing recorder, not assuming every older hardware/computer combination is supported. The unresolved Contec 1000 identity supplies no dependable alternative price or performance claim, and Eko DUO does not replace a complete diagnostic 12-lead service.

Buy the defibrillator's next pads and battery with the first

The old preference for ZOLL M Series, LIFEPAK 12 and MRx reflected acquisition cost. Today's decision must include the parts that expire while the unit waits. Philips' MRx letter ended US and US-territory pads, batteries and accessories support in February 2021. That notice cannot be generalized to every country, but it makes an unsupported US-origin MRx a poor platform to standardize now. Current service endpoints for every ZOLL M and LIFEPAK 12 variant were not established in this review.

For hospital resuscitation, R Series Plus and a documented LIFEPAK 15 make sense when staff need their advanced functions. For an AED station, AED 3 and FRx concentrate the budget on a prompted workflow and maintained readiness. That distinction prevents two costly errors: paying for a monitor-defibrillator that the station will never use fully, or buying an AED where manual defibrillation, pacing or diagnostic ECG is required. For pediatric provision, identify AED 3's child-mode arrangement or include the FRx child key. FDA's device/accessory guidance makes compatible electrodes part of the system, not a generic substitute purchase.

A further reason to insist on a complete service record is Stryker's April 2026 correction for identified LIFEPAK units serviced without objective evidence of a completed Performance Inspection Procedure. It includes specific LIFEPAK 15 serials; it is not a finding that all LIFEPAK 15s fail. Verify applicability and corrective-action completion instead of accepting an undocumented 'serviced' sticker.

What would change the choice?

A lower fully configured price can favor X8 on a basic ward. An existing GE parts and service route can favor B105M where expansion is needed. A maintained computer can favor Midmark; unreliable access to that computer can favor ELI 230. For defibrillators, dependable replacement electrodes and batteries can outweigh a cheap console. These are concrete ownership advantages. The reviewed evidence does not establish a comparative field failure rate, and an active product page alone does not establish local repairs.

EDAN X8

Basic ward monitoring

Best for
A ward needing a defined ECG, SpO2, NIBP and temperature package
Why consider it
The X8 has a defined basic monitoring package and separately available CO2 options. Buying the required basic channels first can leave money for spare probes and a replacement battery.
The trade-off
Specify neonatal accessories, CO2 hardware and the required SpO2 technology. X8 does not have the optional invasive-pressure capability shown for X10/X12 in the manufacturer comparison. If invasive pressure is required, compare an appropriately configured X10/X12 or the GE modular alternative; do not assume X8 can be upgraded.
Price & package
PartsSource displayed USD 3,358.06 each on October 16, 2026 for OEM X8, New OEM Original, with 8-inch touchscreen/Wi-Fi, 3/5-lead ECG, RESP, NIBP, EDAN SpO2 and one temperature channel. Price required CO2/printer options separately and confirm accessories. The item is nonreturnable, with a ship date only after order confirmation; freight, tax, export warranty and commissioning remain additional or unverified.
Support
Current EDAN USA by MDPro product offering found. This establishes an identifiable supply channel, not service coverage at the destination.

GE B105M / B125M

Modular expansion

Best for
A hospital that needs expansion or already maintains GE accessories
Why consider it
The B1x5M platform allows additional parameter modules. B105M is the compact starting point; B125M buys a larger display rather than automatically better measurements.
The trade-off
Modules and compatible sensors can dominate the premium. Do not pay for expansion capacity that the hospital will never equip.
Price & package
Quote required for exact screen size, modules, battery and probes.
Support
Current manufacturer platform and documentation verified; local service response and spare availability remain unconfirmed.

Midmark Digital ECG

ECG with an existing computer

Best for
Clinics storing and reviewing 12-lead ECGs electronically
Why consider it
USB-powered acquisition avoids a separate console battery and printer. Its value is strongest when the clinic already owns the supported computer and has a workable records process.
The trade-off
Computer support, software licenses and optional DICOM integration are real costs. A recorder without usable software rights is incomplete.
Price & package
Quote required including workstation software, installation and any integration license.
Support
Current product page found. Midmark also publishes an IQecg manual, revised in 2025, with repair and certification contacts; that does not guarantee every older recorder remains serviceable.

Welch Allyn ELI 230

Standalone ECG and printing

Best for
A clinic wanting acquisition and paper output without depending on a separate PC
Why consider it
A dedicated 12-lead instrument with a full-size printout can be simpler to deploy when computers are scarce or shared. Its screen permits acquisition review before printing.
The trade-off
Paper, printer maintenance and the acquisition module remain recurring costs. The interpretation algorithm supports clinician review; it does not replace it.
Price & package
Quote required; specify wired AM12 or optional wireless acquisition and printer supplies.
Support
Current Hillrom regional product page verified. Destination registration, stock and service commitment require confirmation.

ZOLL R Series Plus

Hospital resuscitation

Best for
A resuscitation area needing AED entry and manual advanced functions
Why consider it
AED operation with access to advanced operation makes one platform useful across trained responders. Readiness checks and CPR feedback are documented capabilities worth pricing where the team will use them.
The trade-off
Pacing and monitoring configuration, compatible electrodes, batteries and accessories must be itemized. It is more equipment than a simple public-access AED station needs.
Price & package
Quote required for the actual monitoring and pacing configuration.
Support
Current manufacturer offering and technical support entry verified; contract coverage is not yet established.

Stryker LIFEPAK 15, exact version specified

Documented refurbished resuscitation platform

Best for
Teams familiar with LIFEPAK and needing a monitor-defibrillator with pacing and ECG capability
Why consider it
Its documented manual/AED operation, synchronized cardioversion and monitoring make it a credible full platform. Stryker publishes version-specific service material, which helps distinguish a supported refurbishment from an unlabeled older unit.
The trade-off
It is substantial transport equipment, not a lightweight AED. Battery condition, enabled parameters and exact V1/V2/V4 identity alter value.
Price & package
Quote required with service report, batteries, electrodes, cables and warranty scope.
Support
Current Stryker TechWeb lists version-specific service resources. Confirm serial acceptance and closure of applicable 2026 service-record correction before buying.

ZOLL AED 3

Managed AED station

Best for
A dedicated AED station where CPR feedback and a combined adult/child workflow are valuable
Why consider it
The integrated child mode and CPR feedback avoid turning the purchase into a miniature monitor project. Optional readiness connectivity may help a managed fleet.
The trade-off
Electrode and battery replacement costs and the process for checking readiness matter more than unused network features.
Price & package
Quote required including initial electrodes, battery and any connectivity service.
Support
Current manufacturer product and accessories documented; local replacement lead times unverified.

Philips HeartStart FRx, model 861304

Prompted AED workflow

Best for
A facility prioritizing a familiar prompted AED workflow
Why consider it
Adult/child SMART Pads II with the optional infant/child key provide a defined accessory system. It is a different purchasing job from an ALS monitor-defibrillator.
The trade-off
Include the child key if needed; do not assume it comes with every offer. This does not replace manual cardioversion, pacing or a diagnostic ECG.
Price & package
Quote required with pad expiry dates, battery and child key specified.
Support
Current Philips product page found; approved accessories and territory service must be checked.

Beyond the purchase price

Budget for the complete service.

Cost per usable service = delivered complete system + accessories + software/computer or paper costs + scheduled service + battery/pad replacements + downtime provision, divided by completed monitoring-days, ECG studies or maintained resuscitation-station years.

  • Monitor probes and cuff sizes; optional CO2 modules and sampling supplies
  • PC/software compatibility and integration licenses versus standalone ECG paper and printer service
  • Defibrillator battery health, compatible pads and expiry wastage
  • Version-specific service acceptance and a spare device while repairs travel

Questions to resolve

  • Which monitor parameters and patient sizes are required at each bed?
  • Is the ECG quote transferable software plus recorder, or hardware alone?
  • What exact LIFEPAK 15 version and enabled options are supplied?
  • Who will supply compatible electrodes and batteries in the destination country for the intended ownership period?

What the evidence does not establish

  • TeleView, GE MX Series and Contec 1000 identities are unresolved in the historical notes.
  • No equivalent delivered quotes or comparative failure-rate evidence were verified.
  • Current factory support for particular DASH, MP, Passport, ZOLL M, LIFEPAK 12 and MRx serials was not confirmed.
