Beds and stretchers: pay for easier patient transfers

Manual, electric and refurbished beds change staff work in different ways. Stretchers need a separate test on the route they will travel.

Your buying summary

The decision at a glance.

Start here
Compare crank-adjusted Praktika 2 where mechanical positioning suits patients and staffing. Its maximum patient weight is 165 kg; its 200 kg safe working load is a different limit.
Spend more when
Eleganza 1's electric positioning can earn its cost with frequent repositioning. A refurbished Advanta 2 fits more naturally into an already supported fleet. For stretchers, compare complete ST1 and P8005 packages.
Watch the budget
Include the compatible mattress and freight before judging a frame price. P8005's Steering Plus is optional. An Advanta 2 seller's ICU description does not change the manufacturer's med-surg scope.
Check the support
Test loaded maneuverability along actual turns, thresholds and lift entrances. Check rail latches and brakes, then obtain actuator, handset and battery support for powered beds.

Ask the supplier

  1. Does this bed, mattress and rail combination meet the intended patient requirements?
  2. Which steering and equipment mounts are included on the stretcher?
  3. Can our technician obtain replacement brake, castor and positioning parts?

Price the daily work of moving the patient

Manual adjustment saves dependence on powered positioning, but staff do the work instead. That can be a good fit for one ward and a poor fit for another with dependent patients, frequent repositioning or fewer staff. Judge the bed during a realistic transfer and cleaning workflow, rather than comparing frames in an empty-room photograph.

Praktika 2's crank height adjustment is a concrete reason to choose it over fixed-height Praktika 1. Its published maximum patient weight is 165 kg, distinct from the 200 kg safe working load; the population must fit both the intended use and the complete configuration. Eleganza 1 earns its electric premium when its positioning removes a repeated handling problem and the hospital can maintain the controls, actuators and battery.

The surface, rails and brakes are the core package

Specify the mattress with the bed and rails. Length alone does not establish compatibility: the surface, cover, cleaning method and intended patients also matter. An expensive electric frame paired with a worn or mismatched donated mattress is an incomplete purchase. Compare the delivered system and its replacement surface cost.

Give brakes, castors and rail latches priority in acceptance and spare-parts planning. They determine whether the ordinary transfer can happen reliably. Optional displays and other electronics should earn their budget after the basic handling system is complete.

When the USD 3,295 Advanta 2 makes sense

The Victori offer supplies a specific starting point: USD 3,295 for refurbished SKU P1190 with a mattress and named functions, freight extra, viewed October 16, 2026. The listed 90-day warranty still needs useful geographic coverage. Compare actuator and battery checks, rail condition, fitted-scale verification, electrical safety and the actual mattress description before treating it as an equivalent alternative to a new bed.

An existing Advanta service can make the purchase attractive because technicians, staff and spare parts already support that platform. A new remote facility acquires those obligations along with the bed. Baxter describes Advanta 2 for low-to-moderate acuity med-surg use; a dealer's ICU label does not expand that scope. The value comes from a supported, appropriate unit, not a universal claim that refurbished beds are cheaper to own.

Put both stretchers on the same route

Compare ST1 and P8005 on the longest normal route, tight turns, permitted slopes, thresholds and lift entrances with an appropriate simulated load. Add the monitor, oxygen cylinder and other equipment that travels with the patient. A trolley that looks compact without those accessories may become difficult to handle.

ST1 supplies a clear basic transport comparison with fifth-wheel steering and central locking. Hillrom P8005 brings hydraulic height controls and a 700 lb (317 kg) safe working load; its Steering Plus system is optional. Match that configuration before comparing maneuverability or price. Also distinguish ST1 from ST1-X imaging equipment and a current P8005 brochure configuration from an older used unit.

Fund imaging features or other added functions when they remove a repeated transfer problem. Otherwise, the better use of the budget may be a complete surface, mounting and maintenance package. The reviewed specifications support those differences, not a claim that one stretcher lasts longer.

LINET Praktika 2

Mechanical height adjustment

Best for
General wards whose staff can accommodate manual adjustment.
Why consider it
Height adjustment distinguishes it from fixed-height Praktika 1; it avoids powered positioning dependence.
The trade-off
Cranking adds staff effort. The published 165 kg maximum patient weight is distinct from its 200 kg safe working load. Neither is appropriate for every patient population.
Price & package
Quote required with mattress, rails, castors, accessories and delivery.
Support
Current OEM page and instructions are available. Obtain local crank, brake and rail parts commitments.

LINET Eleganza 1

Electric ward positioning

Best for
General wards that use positioning frequently and can maintain electric beds.
Why consider it
A standard acute-care platform is a more focused comparison than paying automatically for ICU connectivity and specialist functions.
The trade-off
Electric capability creates battery, actuator, handset and controller dependencies. Confirm the actual configuration and outage behavior.
Price & package
Quote required; compare a complete mattress-and-bed package.
Support
Current OEM page exists; country service coverage and parts stock remain unverified.

Hillrom Advanta 2, documented refurbished unit

Refurbished value within a supported fleet

Best for
A hospital whose technicians already maintain the platform and can obtain compatible parts.
Why consider it
An established local fleet can make training and spares simpler than introducing another bed family.
The trade-off
Condition, serial range and mattress compatibility control value. The OEM describes low-to-moderate acuity med-surg use; a dealer calling it an ICU bed does not change that.
Price & package
Victori Medical lists USD 3,295 for refurbished SKU P1190 with patient controls, scale, bed-exit functions and a mattress; freight extra, viewed Oct 16, 2026.
Support
Baxter maintains a product/support route. The dealer lists a 90-day warranty; obtain written geographic coverage and parts terms.

Stryker ST1, model 6300

Basic transport and steering

Best for
A transport service needing steering and brakes rather than a second ward bed.
Why consider it
The manufacturer specifies fifth-wheel steering and central locking.
The trade-off
Check loaded maneuverability, thresholds, lifts and patient access. ST1 and ST1-X imaging configurations are not interchangeable descriptions.
Price & package
Quote required, including appropriate mattress and oxygen-cylinder/accessory configuration.
Support
OEM specifications and technical portal exist; current country supply and serial support need confirmation.

Hillrom Transport Stretcher P8005

Hydraulic transport alternative

Best for
Hospitals able to maintain Hillrom stretchers and seeking hydraulic height adjustment for routine transfers.
Why consider it
Baxter's transport specification lists hydraulic height controls on both sides, fold-down rails and head/foot brake controls. The published safe working load is 700 lb (317 kg).
The trade-off
Steering Plus is optional on the transport model. Specify it before comparing maneuverability or price with ST1; confirm the selected width fits the route.
Price & package
Quote required for the exact generation, surface, steering system and accessories. No new or refurbished price has been established.
Support
The current manufacturer-hosted portfolio documents the platform. Obtain country and serial-specific parts support; an old P8005 listing does not establish the configuration in this brochure.
Beyond the purchase price

Budget for the complete service.

Annual cost per available bed-day = (annualized delivered bed and surface cost + inspections + repairs + replacement surfaces + downtime costs) ÷ available bed-days.

  • Freight volume and last-mile handling
  • Mattress replacement and cleaning
  • Rail, brake and castor parts
  • Actuators, controls and battery on electric models
  • Staff effort during repositioning and transfer
Further checks & evidence limits

Questions to resolve

  • Which patient weights and care levels must the bed accommodate?
  • Does the complete bed/surface/rail configuration match the manufacturer’s compatibility requirements?
  • Can the local technician obtain the common failure parts without international shipment?

What the evidence does not establish

  • Installed prices and country service coverage require quotes.
  • No independent comparative field reliability established.
  • Refurbished condition cannot be inferred from a model name or listing photo.
