Endoscopic cryotherapy: budget beyond the console
A truFreeze console needs the right catheter and venting package, dependable liquid-nitrogen supply and a prepared specialist service. Test those costs before committing to the machine.

This archive photograph illustrates the equipment setting; it does not show or verify the exact device, configuration or service compared in this article.
The decision at a glance.
- Start here
- Define the justified application and complete authorized treatment pathway before costing the console.
- Spend more when
- Required supplies, staffing, facilities or continuity make the accepted service sustainable.
- Watch the budget
- Cryotherapy pathway cost = complete console/application setup + nitrogen and supply logistics + all planned-session consumables, staffing, scope processing, training, maintenance and continuity.
- Check the support
- Essential venting, nitrogen logistics, trained staff or continuing case supplies remain unfunded or unestablished.
Ask the supplier
- Which exact intended application, scope, catheter and venting configuration does this offer support?
- What case supplies and nitrogen/filling requirements are separate from CC301?
- What application-specific training, service and continuity arrangements accompany the package?
Decide which specialist service is being funded
A hospital buying endoscopic spray cryotherapy is adding a treatment capability, not simply another accessory to an endoscopy tower. The responsible specialist team must define the intended application, patient pathway and evidence supporting its use. That choice comes before estimating how many procedures will repay a console.
Keep gastrointestinal and airway applications separate in the proposal. The appropriate scope, catheter, gas-evacuation arrangement, staffing and clinical response capability need their own approved configuration. Results reported for one application or patient group cannot establish the value or safety of another.
The CC301 package illustrates what remains to buy
STERIS lists truFreeze CC301 as a console and fill kit. The console supports active and passive venting procedures, but that description does not make the two procedure packages interchangeable. Its catalogue separately lists the 2000181 active-venting CryoDecompression Tube, a 16Fr item sold in a box of five.
Reconcile the complete application-specific basket: compatible scope and catheter, required venting components, other case supplies and the console’s working accessories. Count what is included in the actual offer. A used console photographed with a foot pedal and fill hose still needs a continuing source of the exact treatment supplies.
The manufacturer-linked spray-kit instructions identify single-use components and the need for adequate gas evacuation. Venting is therefore part of clinical and technical acceptance, not an optional line to remove from a cheaper quote. The team must establish the applicable current kit instructions; this purchasing comparison is not a venting or treatment protocol.
Nitrogen logistics belong in the purchase decision
Establish how the hospital will obtain, receive, hold and replenish the required liquid nitrogen, including supply interruptions and delivery charges. Have facilities and safety staff approve the exact filling and storage arrangement. STERIS’s fill guide specifically calls for a well-ventilated filling area and appropriate protection; a fill kit alone does not establish a suitable local facility.
Compare the planned activity with the supply arrangement. A low-volume service may still incur delivery, storage and other recurring costs between treatment days. Obtain the actual supply terms and expected losses for the proposed setup rather than assuming that only nitrogen sprayed during treatment is paid for. Do not substitute a generic industrial container or filling method for the approved arrangement.
Cost the treatment pathway and the alternative
Build the economic comparison around the specialist team’s planned pathway, including repeat sessions where that pathway requires them. Count staff time, consumables, nitrogen, scope processing, maintenance, training and continuity over a common period. A charge per session multiplied by patient numbers is neither net income nor proof of adequate demand.
For an established service, compare repairing or completing the installed equipment with replacing it. For a new program with uncertain activity or unresolved logistics, compare an appropriate referral arrangement while those constraints are settled. Include the patient-access consequences of referral; a distant alternative can have costs that a console-only calculation misses.
Proceed when the intended application is justified and the complete service has a funded, accepted operating route. Defer when essential supplies, qualified staff or the required facility arrangement remain unestablished. A manufacturer bibliography is a useful route to evidence, but the number of citations is not an outcome comparison and should not be used to promise a superior treatment.
Compare the options.
Complete an established truFreeze service
- Capability
- Focuses investment on the actual missing or failed part of the accepted package.
- Best fit
- A qualified service with a justified application and sustainable supplies.
- Cost to watch
- Console repair alone may leave a catheter, venting or nitrogen gap.
Fund a complete new spray-cryotherapy program
- Capability
- Includes the treatment system and the recurring costs needed to keep it usable.
- Best fit
- A defined specialist pathway with approved logistics and staffing.
- Cost to watch
- A console and fill kit are only the starting package.
Use an established referral route while resolving gaps
- Capability
- Can avoid owning an idle or incomplete specialist system.
- Best fit
- A service without a complete sustainable local operating route.
- Cost to watch
- Clinical suitability and patient-access burdens must be assessed locally.
